What are Masticating Juicers?

Masticating juicers are one of the many types of juicers you can find on the market today. They are a notch below twin-auger juicers in terms of pricing, and instead of using a twin auger, which is two screw-like devices, to extract the juice from your produce, they use a single auger with either a single or double cutting blade.

The key to what makes masticating juicers perform better than centrifugal juicers is that they crush your produce with pressure instead of speed. Because they are also slower, operating from 45 rpm to 80 rpm, than the latter, this makes them produce less heat and oxidation, which keep more of your produce’s nutrients intact.

You may learn more about oxidation here.

Why Invest in Masticating Juicers?

The fresh fruits and vegetables required for your juice are not cheap. Therefore, you will want to get a juicer than will not only last long but will give you more juice for your money spent on your produce. Masticating juicers are designed to do just that: They slowly, effectively crush both soft and hard fruits and vegetables to give you a rich, nutrient-dense juice. When more nutrients are preserved in your juice, you will thereby reap more of the health benefits associated with juicing.

The only drawback of masticating juicers is that they are quite expensive, costing anywhere from $100 – $600. Though the initial investment may be high, keep in mind that the cost of under extracted produce will quickly add up for low-end juicers.

Most masticating juicers will also usually come with 10- to 15-year warranty on motor and parts, ensuring you can juice with confidence without worrying about wear and tear.

How to  Select a Masticating Juicer?

When selecting a masticating juicer, you will want the juicer to give you a high juice yield with minimal foam. The foam amount is an indication of how much oxygen has been whipped into your juice. More oxygen that goes into your juice means less enzymes remain active. Therefore, the less foam produced by the juicer, the better it will be for you in this instance.

Another thing to look out for in a masticating juicer is ease of use. Any habit, especially a healthy one, is not easy to adopt and maintain. The last thing you want is a juicier that makes the forming of this new, healthy habit harder than it already is.

In terms of cleaning, a masticating juicer with fewer components that make up its whole will make things easy for you, as you have fewer parts to clean. If the surfaces of the parts are also smooth rather than rough, cleaning will also be easier, as they are less inclined to shred your sponge while cleaning them.

In most cases, horizontal masticating juicers will be easier to clean than vertical masticating juicers due to the size of the juicing screen, with the former offering a smaller-sized screen.

Types of Masticating Juicers

A masticating juicer can be oriented either vertically or horizontally. Both of them work on the same principle by using an auger to crush your fruits and vegetables, but the former has a smaller footprint and a larger juice yield.  This advantage in return is reflected in the pricing, with the vertical models usually being more expensive than horizontal models.

In any case, my best masticating juicer reviews consist of both models, and here they are to quickly help you decide which is the best one to get.

Best Masticating Juicer Reviews 2017

Best Masticating Juicer – The Omega J8006 Nutrition Center Juicer

omega 1

The Omega J8006 Nutrition Center juicer is also my top pick in my best juicer reviews 2017. Quiet and powerful, equipped with a two-horsepower motor, you can count on this juicer to give you a delicious, nutritious juice every time–without waking up the whole house. The juice yield produced by this juicer was very high, and more so for hard vegetables than soft greens, with low foam. In a test conducted by the Sweethome, this juicer’s older model, the Omega J8004, which is the same as this one except color, exceeded the juice yield of the Breville juicers by almost double.

But that’s not all. The Omega J8006 also offers nut-butter attachments, giving you the option to make peanut butter, soy milk, and more. Many testers have noted that it took them only a few minutes to clean this juicer due to its small juicing screen. What’s widely agreed by them is that this juicer also brought the best value out of commercial-grade juicers. Costing only $276, last I checked on Amazon, this juicer performed just as good, or even better, than more expensive counterparts. Which is why I couldn’t refuse it its top position.

Get this juicer here, and also enjoy a 15-year warranty on the motor and parts.

Best Premium Masticating Juicer – Tribest Slowstar Vertical Slow Juicer

Tribest Slowstar

Selected as the top pick for The Sweethome, the Tribest Slowstar quite easily trumps the Omega J8006 in green juice yield. The only problem with it is that it is quite pricey, costing $330, last I checked on Amazon. Which is why I favor the Omega J8006 for providing the best value. That said, if you have the budget to spare, be sure to look into this juicer, as it’s quality assured.

Many users have noted that this juicer is still going strong after more than four years of use. The juicer’s auger, motor, and feed tube are working just fine. And so is the juicing screen, which is the part that breaks the most, according to experts. Speaking about feed tube, what makes this juicer easy to use is precisely because of a large feed tube. Measuring at 2½ by 1½ inches, which is 67 percent wider than the Omega J8006’s feed tube, this makes for easier prep work.

The effectiveness of this juicer is in large part due to the juicer’s twin-cutting blade instead of one like most juicers. By having an auger with two blades to slice your produce and then squeeze them to extract the juice, you will in effect get a high juice yield with minimal foam. Like the Omega J8006, this juicer also comes with butter-nut attachments along with 15-year warranty on the motor and parts, making it a great value.

Best Value Masticating Juicer – Breville BJS600XL Fountain Crush

Breville BJS600XL

Though not promoted as heavily as centrifugal juicers by Breville, the Breville Fountain Crush has received mostly positive reviews on Amazon and Bed Bath & Beyond. Many users said they have gotten high juice yield from this juicer. Moreover, the juice produced by it was high-quality and vibrant, indicating that a balanced amount of fruits and vegetables made it into the juice.

Perhaps what makes this juicer a little unsavory is due to the juice spout which has no rubber stopper unlike most juicers.  This might make juicing a little messy with it, but it’s certainly not a dealbreaker. Furthermore, some users have reported that its motor stalled from time to time.

But of course this juicer is appealing for many reasons. Besides having high juice yield, this juicer, like the Tribest Slowstar, also has a wide feed tube. To be precise, it measures at 2-1/4 by 1-1/4 inches, which is slightly smaller than the Slowstar, but still big enough to make pre-juice produce prep easy. Throw in a tomato, avocado, and banana in it, and this juicer will excel in juicing these soft fruits and vegetables in particular.

Best Entry-Level Masticating Juicer – Aicok Slow Masticating Juicer Extractor

Aicok Slow Masticating Juicer

The Aicok Slow Masticating Juicer is one of the best-sellers on Amazon. Affordable, durable, and a decent performer, it makes for a great juicer especially for those juicing for the very first time. The auger of this juicer spins around 80 rpm, resulting in nutrient-rich, low-foam juice. Thanks to its slow operation, this juicer also runs very quietly, less than 60 decibels.

With regard to the juice yield, many users have reported that this juicer produced a higher output for leafy greens than hard vegetables. Kale, spinach, and romaine lettuce were crushed into dry, fine pulp, effectively yielding a good amount of green juice. The juice had varied flavor profiles too, which indicate the juicer extracted the greens equally well.

Though the parts of this juicer are advertised as dishwasher safe, it’s recommended that you wash them by hand or with the specialized brush provided out of the box. Also, try not to stuff your fruits and vegetables all at once into the juicer’s feed tube, lest you damage the machine. To maintain the longevity of the juicer, it’s best that you let the machine do its thing, and at its own pace.
